The Wait

As I was taking pictures on a rainy day on the Burrard Inlet in British Columbia, Canada I saw a large squall approaching across the straits. Looking for shelter I noticed an old, overgrown concrete structure a quick climb away. Once inside it occurred to me that I was in an old bunker from WW 2, as I learned later it was part of the coastal defense system in BC against attacks from Japanese forces from the Pacific ocean.

As I watched the squall approaching I realized that I was looking at exactly what soldiers were seeing 75 years before, waiting for an attack year after year which never came.

Pandemic

SameDifferentDay 2020

We are all going through some of the strangest, disturbing and at the same time oddly monotonous times as the world works its way through the pandemic. For some of us these times are devastating, for others it is the same day over and over , an endless repetition of the same day with no end in sight. I tried to shoot a picture which captures that repetitiveness .

This photo was taken from West Vancouver, Canada looking over the Burrard Inlet towards Downtown Vancouver. I had spent several hours taking pictures that day, my gear was packed up and when I turned around for a last look I saw this image. The photo is named “Evolution” because this picture shows the passage of time in a very unique way: the rocks in the foreground are some of the oldest on the North American continent, a random event of nature pushed up rocks from deep in earths crust to the surface millions of years ago. On the horizon is the City of Vancouver, one of the newest cities in North America and that gave this picture its name.

Evolution

Spending time in nature is a huge source of happiness and lets me find my equilibrium each and every time I am out and take pictures. And I feel deeply satisfied and excited when occasionally I come back with a picture which lingers in my mind for some time. That in itself is enough and it should not matter if anybody looks at my pictures. But eventually I wanted to share them and with this website I am.
